Emotions are a great gift: they are the tones and colours of our lives. But they are also a disconnected archipelago. Like notes without a score, they are fleeting, they pass quickly, and they often leave us at the mercy of foolish choices and disintegrate our souls at the deepest level. Today people who are rightly tired with impersonal rituals seek a religious experience which also involves the emotions, but often they seek it in ways detached from the Christian experience. The ancient Christian spiritual tradition has always looked with great attention at the emotional life, inheriting and reprocessing from the previous wisdom a sophisticated analysis of the emotions. This study presents the analysis undertaken by the Stoics on emotions and follows the development of this theme by the first great Christian thinkers. The research is divided into three parts. The first part (published here) analyzes the theory and therapy of the Stoics concerning emotions. The second part will follow the path, not without transformations, of this theory in mediaeval Christianity down to the codification of the seven deadly sins. Finally, we will examine the theory about emotions offered by M. Nussbaum, a philosopher who, in reviewing and updating the old Stoic theory, proposes a neo-cognitivist theory which deeply challenges Christian theology and anthropology
