Description
Artisti estoni: Reio Aare, Flo Kasearu, Paul Kuimet, Eva Labotkin, Tanja Muravskaja, Kristina Norman, Mark Raidpere, Eva Sepping, Liina Siib, 10×10 meters.
Artisti finlandesi: Adel Abidin, Aino Kannisto, Riikka Kuoppala, Mikko Kuorinki, Antti Laitinen, Liisa Lounila, Nelli Palomäki, Anna Rokka, Jani Ruscica, Pia Sirén, Pilvi Takala.
Roma, MACRO, maggio – settembre 2014
The exhibition Shifting Identities brings together, for the first time, 21 new-generation artists from two diverse yet complementary countries, Finland and Estonia, who reflect on their identity. The two nations belong to different geographical regions, namely the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic states, but a series of factors such as history, language, customs and ethnic similarities, indicate a closeness rather than distance between them. What geography separates is united by a history shared at various stages and conditioned by the proximity of the former Soviet Union, which critically influenced the development of the two peoples, both under dictatorship and democracy. Through different languages ranging from photography to sculpture, installation and video, the invited artists recount an identity in progress, which their work renders profound and ambiguous when the whole of Europe is going through a crucial and complex period.
